Short Description

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) degree is awarded by CUHK upon satisfactory completion of at least four years of full-time study. To be considered for registration by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board as a practising pharmacist in Hong Kong, graduates must complete a one-year pharmacy internship training approved by the Board.

The fundamental theme of this programme is the science and practice of pharmacy in relation to the health care needs of Hong Kong. The Pharmacy Programme aims at preparing graduates to become integral members of the health-care team with primary responsibility in managing the safe and cost-effective use of medications and other therapies for the treatment and prevention of disease.

The following areas are covered in the curriculum:

  • Biomedical Sciences (Anatomy/Physiology/Biochemistry/Microbiology)
  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry
  • Pharmaceutics, Dosage Form Science, Pharmacokinetics
  • Pharmaceutical Research Techniques
  • Pharmacogenomics
  • Contemporary Pharmacy Practice and Management
  • Herbal and Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Pharmacology and Therapeutics
  • Pharmacy Clerkships and Research Project

Upon the completion of the Pharmacy programme, the graduate is:

  • prepared with scientific and professional knowledge and skills for contemporary pharmaceutical practice;
  • able to adopt a systematic approach in analyzing and solving problems in the manufacture and quality assurance of pharmaceutical products;
  • able to communicate effectively with patients, peers, other health professionals and the public;
  • confident and competent in counselling patients and clients on prescription, non-prescription and consumer health products;
  • able to identify and appropriately utilize drug information resources to assist with patient-specific drug therapy monitoring;
  • confident in making decisions on patients’ drug therapy and recommending appropriate treatment; and
  • able to build upon his/her knowledge and skills and engage in lifelong continuing education and professional development
